A “green” tax aimed at discouraging high consumption of petroleumIs it fair to have a 'green' tax in India? products may be in the offing. The tax, perhaps in the form of a cess on consumption, would also check vehicular pollution to some extent and also help in controlling the high oil subsidy burden.

This is in view of a fact that there are no measures in place to discourage and reduce the use of polluting fuels. With no sign ofIs it fair to have a 'green' tax in India? moderation in demand for petroleum products, government officials feel a “green” tax should be levied on automobiles, on the lines of similar taxes in the United Kingdom. Some tax experts also agree with this view. However, given the ramifications of such a move and a possible consumer backlash in the run-up to next year’s general election, the government is unlikely to introduce the tax soon.

People feel that the tax shall be at buying of vehicles which consume uneconomical quantities of fuel e.g. SUVs, luxury sedans,Is it fair to have a 'green' tax in India? etc.rather than on petroileum products. Purchase of such vehicles should be discouraged by higher tax. Similarly, for electronic products like Fridge, TV, ACs etc. which are low on enery effeciency there should be a green tax.

If green tax can save our environment and help in energy conservation then it is always welcome. But like in other cases in India, one cannot rule out the possibility of tax evasion.

I think that along with a moderate cess at the petroleum consumption, there should also be a strict check on the number of vehicles owned by each working member of the family. People understand by the hard way in some situations. But this is also true that a consumer backlash is possible, thus a radical combination of mass awareness courtesy media, a direct fine or a charge on excess consumption on fuel and a strict action policy for families who keep more cars than a particular specified limit is what an example of a solution to combat people who care very less for the environment where they live and pollute.

When the so called developed nations are moving away from excessive fuel consumption,India has just begun. Imagine the leap in fuel consumption once the Nano gets on the roads. 80% of the two wheelers will get replace by the Nano. So adding to the traffic congestion, India will be guzzling n times the fuel it uses today.
A green tax should be levied right from the manufacturer. That way the vehicles will be manufactured more fuel efficiently and people will think a few more times before buying them. Another way of levying the tax is at periodic intervals after a pollution check. No one will care about the environment unless it directly pinches their pockets. So a green tax is the right way to go.
